Project Brief

ACIDLOOP targets the Indian metal finishing industry with the two-fold objectives of (i) introducing technology innovation for acid recovery (ii) improving resource efficiency. It is a 4-year project (2012-2016) supported by the European Union (EU) under the SWITCH Asia Programme.

Intervention Logic

What is the intervention logic of the project? The following facts show why the resource efficiency approach is applied in this project and how the target groups benefit from this approach:Electroplating process in an Indian metal finishing SME

  • Resource efficiency is a proven approach for cost reduction with no or low investment

  • Emissions and wastes are raw and auxiliary materials – which have mostly been purchased by paying money – and have not been transformed into saleable products

  • Resource efficiency is high when nearly all the raw and auxiliary materials are transformed to saleable products and waste is minimized

  • Acid recovery in closed loop results in resource savings, better product quality and better productivity leading to higher profit

Benefits

Benefits accruing from the project activities are not only economic in nature but also environmental and social. Some of the major benefits of the projects are:

  • Resource savings due to reuse of the unreacted acid and water in the process

  • Better product quality

  • Higher profit due to decreased customer complaints about product quality

  • Lower costs of operation due to lower consumption of resources such as electricity, fuel and water
  • Improved groundwater conditions by reduced environmental impact

  • Reduced landfill (as only a part of the spent acid is neutralized)

  • Better working conditions

ACIDLOOP

ACIDLOOP is a 4-year project (2012-2016) supported by the European Union (EU) under the SWITCH Asia Programme. This programme emphasizes sustainable consumption and production in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). ACIDLOOP is targeted specifically at the Indian metal finishing industry.  It aims to introduce technology innovation for acid recovery as well as resource efficiency that would lead to improved environmental quality and combat pollution.  The activities is taking place in various locations in northern, western and southern India.
